Amulets of the digital age
Amulets of the digital age

Immersive installation
In the project, I explored the contradictions between the modern and the old worlds, looking at how to find touchpoints between them and extract the maximum benefit from this interaction. From the old world, I took the Khokhloma pattern and wood—the most popular material in Russia.

From the new world, I took the latest achievements in technology, which evoke fear and anxiety, and with which humanity must negotiate and learn to interact. For each fear, I offer
  • an original ornament,
  • create olfactory compositions according to the rules of aromatherapy and aromachology,
  • and compose an audio accompaniment. Engaging three sensory channels allows for a deeper immersion into the exploration of one's relationship with technological progress.

Installation structure and the viewer's experience
Traditional shamanic practices work simultaneously with several sensory systems: scent, sound, and imagery. Modern scientific research also confirms that scents and sounds are powerful tools for influencing the psyche.

The viewer sits in the center of the circle and finds themselves inside an amulet-painting (mapping). They are invited to open a specific vial with a scent corresponding to the painting and listen to an audio composition. The paintings alternate one after another.

The viewer can observe themselves and discover their relationship to a specific fear. If anxiety is present, they can explore what helps them cope with it better—a specific sensory channel (visual, olfactory, auditory) or a combination of them.
